INCENTIVES AS OF 2019: AND, YES FEDERAL TAX CREDITS -- extended by a bipartisan congressional committee: 30% true tax credit for residentail & commercial solar energy installations currently still available.
Here are the specifics about all incentives available for solar PURCHASES, not leases (leasing companies keep your tax credits):
RESIDENTIAL INCENTIVES -- No rebates on Long Island, only rest of NY state. Both NY State and Federal tax credits ARE available.
COMMERCIAL INCENTIVES -- Rebates throughout NY State for commercial solar, but NOT on Long Island because the rebate tiers have been exhausted. Federal tax credits ARE available. But, there is no NY State tax credit for commercial.
NOT-FOR-PROFITS -- No rebates, no tax credits (because non-profits do not pay taxes) anywhere in NY State.
Solar energy continues to be tax-free. In short, your purchase price is your purchase (not leasing -- that offers no benefits) price, no federal, state or local sales tax applies.) The only exception is for commercial solar in Nassau County, which unlike Suffolk County, does charge sales tax. We have advocated to our local county legislators and the county executive for change but to no avail. Why not urge them to exempt solar by contacting them also?
Property tax exempt on Long Island. The only home improvement that has a moratorium on increasing your property taxes is solar energy!
