Yes, Long Islanders, LIPA still offers incentives for you to install a solar energy system on your home or business.
Performance-Based LIPA Solar Pioneer Program
Launched on March 1, 2013, LIPA Solar Pioneer cash rebates are calculated according to the particular PV system's expected performance, and not by the system capacity.
Called an Expected Performance-Based Buydown (EPBB), homeowners with very rare "perfect" solar conditions receive up to $16,600* toward the PV system's cost as of May 24, 2013. The amount is based on expected system performance calculated according to site and system characteristics, such as southern exposure, shading, roof tilt, and other factors. Those with less-than-perfect conditions will receive reduced amounts based on a calculation of performance.
This EPBB type of incentive program has been in place for some time in other places in the U.S., such as California. It is designed to capture the optimum amount of solar energy generated by individual systems. This makes the dollars that utility companies expend to ratepayers for these programs worth more in terms of power generation, important in reducing the strain on the "grid," the true reason solar energy programs are offered by utiilty companies in the first place.
We wait for the rebate, so you don't have to. This makes the cost of your system even more immediately affordable! The EPBB rebate is a one-time, lump-sum payment based on the expected production of the solar energy system. The LIPA application for rebate process often takes several months, so Built Well Solar will wait for the LIPA reimbursement of the amount so you don't have to go out of pocket -- the rebate is deducted right off the cost of the system!!
As part of Built Well Solar's complete turnkey design and installation process, we submit and process the EPBB rebate application on your behalf. This includes our analysis of your site for shading, our determining the orientation of the system (its azimuth relative to true South as well as accommodating your roof pitch), and selecting the top quality components to be used (solar panels and inverters) to calculate the expected performance of your system. As a LIPA-approved solar energy installer, we calculate the expected rebate on your behalf through LIPA's designated online calculator.
To clarify, the current LIPA cash rebates (as of May 24, 2013) are as follows:
- The Solar Pioneer residential purchase is currently based on a calculation of performance, approximated at an EPBB incentive maximum of $16,600 with perfect solar conditions (south-facing, no shading, optimal tilt, etc.) and with less-performing systems provided a reduced amount usually averaging about $13,000 for a 10kW sized system, for example, or 50% of installed cost, whichever is less. As with all rebate levels, the current level is subject to change.
- As of May 24 2013, the Solar Pioneer for residential lease is based on a calculation of performance, approximated at an EPBB incentive maximum of $15,800 with perfect solar conditions (south-facing, no shading, optimal tilt, etc.) and with less-performing systems provided a reduced amount usually averaging about $12,000 for a 10kW sized system, for example, or 50% of installed cost, whichever is less. Although this was not expected to change since its introduction in March 2013, the level was reduced as of the May date. As with all rebate levels, the current level is subject to change.
- As of March 15, 2013, the Solar Entrepreneur commercial purchase rebate is also currently a maximum rebate of $172,000 or 50% of installed cost, whichever is less. As with all rebate levels, the current level is subject to change.
- As of March 25, 2013, the Solar Entrepreneur non-residential municipal/non-profit purchase rebate level is $225,000 or 65% of installed costs, whichever is less. As with all rebate levels, the current level is subject to change.

LIPA approves solar leases for homeowners
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Board of Trustees voted recently to modify the Solar Pioneer program to provide rebates to residential customers who lease qualifying solar PV systems. Before this agreement, Long Island homeowners could only receive LIPA rebates if they purchased a home solar system. Since the LIPA Solar Pioneer rebates cut the cost of solar energy systems by as much as half, they have been key to their affordability.
Now this new solar leasing alternative offers the opportunity for Long Islanders to install solar panels on their homes at a reduced or no upfront cost, in exchange for turning those LIPA rebates as well the tax credits over to the solar lease provider that owns and monitors the system. While not eliminating the cost of the power as is true when owning the system, the homeowner who leases the system pays a lower than current rate for the power.
“We all know that purchasing a system outright is the best investment a homeowner can make,” said Built Well Solar president Dan Sabia. “Purchasing a system is the only way to benefit from FREE monthly electricity for some 25 years. Still, this new leasing alternative offers homeowners another choice. It can’t eliminate the costs of the solar electricity generated, but it can somewhat reduce those costs.”

April 2012 UPDATE: Solar Pioneer Rebates for Homeowners Stay at $1.75 per watt for Now, While Solar Entrepreneur Rebates Change
Although LIPA's Solar Pioneer residential solar rebates are holding steady for now*, Solar Entrepreneur business rebate levels were just reduced to the lesser of $1.30 per watt or 50% of cost for solar-electric systems up to a maximum 50 kW system size. That means that businesses can still take advantage of up to $65,000 in cash back when they have a PV system installed. And, Built Well Solar still will wait for the rebate, so businesses don't have to go out of pocket! Also, federal tax credits of 30% as well as depreciation are available for eligible businesses, further reducing the overall cost.
Also, Solar Entreprenuer rebates for municipalities, schools and non-profits, always higher than other rebates because these non-taxpayers cannot take advantage of the tax credits, were also just reduced. These rebates are $2.00 per watt, or up to $100,000 for the maximum 50 kilowatt PV system.
