Free Sunscreen Guide

We (of course!) love the sun, but does the sun love us? Its harmful rays call for sunscreen. As summer temperatures on Long Island bring beach days and other fun in the sun, we’re reminded that the ozone layer has dwindled over decades and sunscreen is more important than ever to protect us all. With so many choices on the market today, how do you choose the right sunscreen for you and your family? Check out the free guide published by The Environmental Working Group.

The global sun care market is a $10 billion business, over $2 billion in the U.S. alone, according to global data provider Statista. There are countless sunscreen products on the market, making it tough to know which to buy. There are basically two types — chemical (whose ingredients absorb into the skin) and mineral (creating a mineral barrier to the sun), the latter considered less appealing because it often leaves a white residue, but it may be a safer choice.

The Environmental Working Group publishes an annual guide to sunscreens. This year’s list found that a staggering three-quarters of the almost 1,700 SPF products evaluated fall short of adequate sun protection and many contain ingredients that may pose health risks.
