Soon it will be honey bee swarming season on Long Island.
Bees are crucial for both human well-being and the health of the planet, primarily because they are essential pollinators.
According to bee experts at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, a third of the world’s food production depends on bees.
If you see a bee nest, it’s best not to remove it or use pesticides or other means to destroy it. The environmentally sound way to handle it is to call a local beekeeper to relocate it. Many beekeepers will remove a swarm of bees at no or little charge; some will ask for a donation or a minimum reimbursement to assist with their fuel costs.
